What distinguishes the craftsmanship and structural specification of your dining tables?

Our tables represent a level of unrivalled specification found nowhere else in the UK. Unlike standard factory-finished or container-shipped imports from Asia, each piece is fully handmade to a singular architectural standard by a local craftsman using slow-grown old-growth reclaimed pine — timber that has naturally acclimatised over decades, making it significantly more stable in centrally heated homes than fast-grown modern wood.

The Cotswold table is defined by its monolithic proportions, utilising reclaimed solid pine planks nearly 5cm thick with a density of approximately 510 kg/m³ — substantially heavier and more durable than the low-density softwoods found in mass-market alternatives. This creates a physical sense of permanence and heft that communicates quality long before you touch the surface. We utilise a labour-intensive finishing technique exclusive to our workshop, offering a traditional limewash or hand-applied natural wax that enhances the wood's historic patina rather than masking it, allowing centuries of organic character to remain visible.

The hallmark of our craft is the hand-carved gothic pedestal base, constructed using traditional hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery — the oldest and strongest mechanical interlock in woodworking, providing superior resistance to twisting and racking without reliance on modern adhesives alone. These bases are hand-finished using a proprietary method with no factory equivalent, ensuring a completely unique aesthetic for every client. The exposed iron cross-bolt at the core of the base is a structural antique original, serving as the functional anchor of the table rather than a decorative addition. This is substantial fixed-format furniture designed to be a generational heirloom, delivered fully assembled and never flat-packed.

How do your finishes compare to high-street 'rustic' looks?

Our finishes are hand-applied in UK workshop. We use professional-grade natural waxes and subtle whitewashes that enhance, rather than mask, the wood's natural grain. This creates a sophisticated, matte texture that pairs beautifully with the refined palettes found in country styled interiors.

What joinery techniques are used in your handmade furniture?

We use traditional carpentry methods, such as mortise and tenon joints, to ensure structural integrity. We avoid the use of flat-pack fixtures or veneers, focusing instead on the honest, chunky construction synonymous with premium country-living aesthetics.

Are your apothecary cabinets and glazed cupboards unique pieces?

Yes. Many of our pieces are one-off vintage finds or are handmade in such small batches that no two are identical. This makes them ideal for collectors who shop at auctions or Vinterior for statement pieces that bring a unique "collected" feel to a home.

Where do you source your reclaimed timber?

We specifically seek out historic timber from period properties, old barns, and Victorian buildings across Europe. This "salvaged" approach ensures that every apothecary chest or farmhouse table has original saw marks and nail holes, providing a level of authenticity you won't find in luxury "repro" furniture.

Does your furniture appreciate in character over time?

Absolutely. Unlike mass-produced furniture that degrades, our solid wood pieces develop a richer patina with age. The natural movement and character of 100-year-old pine or oak make each piece an original work of art that feels at home alongside high-end antiques.

How does the weight and density of your reclaimed pine compare to modern pine furniture?

There is a significant difference in the heft and grain density of our timber. Because we use aged, slow-grown reclaimed floorboards and joists, the wood is far heavier and more durable than modern, fast-grown pine. This solid construction ensures our pieces are heavy, stable, and built to last as family heirlooms.

Is your furniture environmentally friendly?

Sustainability is at our core. By using reclaimed materials and supporting local UK makers, we reduce the carbon footprint associated with furniture production and prevent high-quality historic timber from going to waste. Our tables, benches, cabinets and drawers are all handmade from reclaimed European wood.

Do your glazed cabinets use safety glass?

Yes, our handmade and restored storage pieces are designed for the modern home, combining traditional joinery with durable hardware and glass suitable for everyday use.

Are your multi-drawer storage cabinets handmade or vintage?

We offer a mix of both. Our popular 20 and 36-drawer pine storage cabinets are handmade to evoke the timeless "apothecary chest" aesthetic, while our Vintage Grey Glazed Cupboards are carefully selected antiques. Both focus on solid timber construction and functional longevity. All are handmadde in Europe.

Can I customise the size and finish of a rustic dining table?

Yes. We specialise in bespoke UK craftsmanship. Whether you need a round pedestal table like The Provence or a 10-seater farmhouse table, we can tailor the dimensions and finishes (from natural beeswax to whitewashed) to fit your space. Wait time is approx. 8-12 weeks.

Will a reclaimed or rustic table have an uneven surface?

Not necessarily. Rustic and reclaimed tables can range from gently textured to very smooth. Some of our tables have a more even top (often with a matt varnish finish), while waxed finishes keep a more natural look and feel. Read more in our guide post on rustic surfaces and how to care for them.

Will the wood crack or split over time?

Our tables are made of wood with high-density (approx. 510 kg/m³); significantly heavier, stable, and more durable.

Our tables are made from properly dried timber and built to be stable for everyday use. In normal home conditions, you shouldn’t see splitting.
New wood with higher moisture content; frequently warps in centrally heated homes.

If you ever notice anything unusual, contact us and we’ll advise. (As with any solid-wood furniture, it’s best to avoid placing the table right next to strong heat sources like radiators, which can excessively dry timber.)

What’s the difference between wax/limewash and varnish?

Wax and limewash give a softer, more authentic finish that’s easy to refresh over time and wears in naturally. A matt varnish can provide a more even, wipe-clean surface while still keeping a natural, non-gloss look - ideal if you prefer a smoother tabletop. Read more in our guide post on rustic surfaces and how to care for them.

How do I keep a rustic table looking good day to day?

Both waxed and varnished finishes are easy to live with. For everyday cleaning, simply wipe with a soft damp cloth and dry afterwards, and use placemats/coasters for heat and liquids. Waxed tables are easy to maintain because the finish can be refreshed when needed with a light re-wax, while matt varnished tables offer a smooth, wipe-clean surface that stays looking even with minimal upkeep.
